Sighting in Carentan-les-Marais, September 12, 2024

Manche, Normandie, France

Sighting on September 12, 2024 in Carentan-les-Marais (Manche, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

From their home, in the middle of the night at 1:35 a.m., the witness noticed a bright, steady white light that appeared twice in a row. A second, fainter point of light then moved toward this main source. As the two lights seemed to meet, the brighter one shot off suddenly at extreme speed and vanished in less than two seconds. About five seconds after the event ended, an airliner passed in the same direction, slightly higher in the sky.

The case was judged to have low consistency: there was only one witness, and no photos or videos exist for that specific date. The images used in the investigation relate to a different observation the witness made on 12 November 2024, which they consider similar to the first. Because the phenomenon was very low in the sky, it could correspond to reflections on an obstacle (a tree, a pole or a building) or on the witness's own window. The available information did not allow the analysis to go any further. GEIPAN classified the case as C, an unidentified phenomenon owing to insufficient data.
