Sighting in Vire, August 10, 2013
Calvados, Normandie, France
Sighting on August 10, 2013 in Vire (Calvados, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).
What happened
Around 7:30 pm, several people noticed a dark, cigar-shaped object crossing the sky without making any sound. It moved fairly fast, drifting with the wind, just below the clouds. The sighting was intermittent and lasted between 15 and 20 seconds. GEIPAN found the accounts very precise and the witnesses very reliable, and rated the strangeness of the phenomenon as moderate.
No hypothesis accounts for all the details the witnesses reported. The investigation did consider that it could have been an aircraft or a drone, if the viewing conditions had kept the witnesses from making out some of their characteristic features. It also considered an object carried by the wind, such as a balloon shaped like an airplane. None of this led to an identification, either certain or approximate. The case is classified C (insufficient data) because there is no precise information on the object's distance or on the wind.
