Sighting in Chassors, April 7, 2015
Charente, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France
Sighting on April 7, 2015 in Chassors (Charente, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class A).
What happened
At around 10:30 p.m., a witness noticed several points of light in the sky that seemed to move very fast. The lights stayed visible for more than an hour, after which the witness stopped watching. The witness had filmed the sighting and gave the video to the newspaper Sud-Ouest. That same evening, they had phoned the nearby air base to ask whether there was any air traffic and had been told there was none. Weather records from Cognac showed a northwest wind of 20 to 30 km/h.
The GEIPAN contacted military air traffic control, which supplied a series of radar tracks. These matched laps of the traffic pattern around the Cognac-Chateaubernard military base, and a map shows the aircraft paths. Air Base 709 later confirmed significant night-flight training traffic that evening; the earlier negative answer may have come from someone not authorised to discuss military activity with the public. The GEIPAN classified the case as A: the lights were successive passes by military aircraft training at night.
