Sighting in Château-Gontier, October 5, 1976
Mayenne, Pays de la Loire, France
Sighting on October 5, 1976 in Château-Gontier (Mayenne, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).
What happened
Two witnesses noticed a point of light in the sky that caught their attention. They saw it on two occasions, on 5 and 6 October 1976, each time between 6:30 and 6:40 a.m. It was an oval-shaped luminous object, a bright fiery red.
During the first sighting, the object seemed to stay still in the north. During the second, it moved slowly from east to west. Each time it stayed visible for less than a minute before suddenly vanishing.
No other witness account was collected about this phenomenon. Because very little information was available, the GEIPAN concluded that these were successive observations of a luminous phenomenon and classified the case as C: insufficient data.
