Sighting in Étrelles, June 1, 2014
Ille-et-Vilaine, Bretagne, France
Sighting on June 1, 2014 in Étrelles (Ille-et-Vilaine, France). After investigation, GEIPAN considers this phenomenon unexplained (class D).
What happened
Two witnesses were driving in a service vehicle when they briefly saw a dark mass in the night sky. It carried two small lights that gave off only a faint glow. All of a sudden the mass shot away at a dizzying speed and vanished.
A field investigation confirmed what the witnesses had reported. Several explanations were considered, but none fitted the observations well, including a meteor (fireball) passing overhead. Both witnesses were judged highly reliable, and viewing conditions were ideal. However, the direction from which the phenomenon appeared is uncertain, the sighting was very short, and the two witnesses discussed it with each other right away, so their accounts are not fully independent. With no photograph or video, these factors ruled out a D2 rating.
GEIPAN therefore classified the case D1: unexplained, with high consistency thanks to the quality of the two testimonies, and a medium degree of strangeness, since the object's physical reality is possible but not certain.
