Sighting in Clermont-Ferrand, January 1, 2008

Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on January 1, 2008 in Clermont-Ferrand (Puy-de-Dôme, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a reflection or photographic artefact (class A).

What happened

On 1 January 2008, a motorist took photographs of the Puy de Dôme with a mobile phone from inside their vehicle. A month later, while looking through the pictures, they noticed a luminous phenomenon they could not explain, and sent the photographs to GEIPAN.

The investigation found that it was the reflection of a light inside the car, probably the dome light or some other similar source. The case was classified A (identified): the orange light visible in the photograph did not come from outside the vehicle.
