Sighting in Clessé, March 20, 2014

Saône-et-Loire, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on March 20, 2014 in Clessé (Saône-et-Loire, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

On a Thursday evening, at around 10:45 pm, two people saw three orange points of light in the sky. The lights moved in formation, silently but fairly fast, and then vanished one after another. Only one of the two witnesses gave a statement to the investigation.

GEIPAN noted that orange lights crossing the sky within a few minutes, in the same direction as the light southerly wind recorded that evening, strongly suggest Thai lanterns. Such releases usually take place on a Saturday or Sunday, but spring or carnival season could have prompted a local celebration. The town hall, however, had received no report of any such event. The case was classified B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
