Sighting in Colleville, October 12, 2024
Seine-Maritime, Normandie, France
Sighting on October 12, 2024 in Colleville (Seine-Maritime, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class B).
What happened
One evening, three witnesses (a couple and their child) were standing in the driveway in front of their home when they noticed blue flashes in the sky. The flashes recurred at regular intervals, always in the same spot and at the same angle. They were visible on the horizon, above the neighbours' roof. The sighting lasted about three minutes, and a video of the phenomenon was recorded.
The sky was overcast and it was a Saturday night. GEIPAN rated the case as having low strangeness and good consistency, even though it rested on a single testimony. The description and visual appearance matched a sky-tracer very closely. This is an outdoor searchlight, with one or several beams, that sweeps through 180°. The flashes were straight, appeared regularly about every second, and alternated. The night-time setting, the Saturday and the cloud cover all fit this explanation.
However, the investigation could not find the exact source of the phenomenon. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: a probable observation of the effects of a sky-tracer.
