Sighting in Louviers, August 10, 2020
Eure, Normandie, France
Sighting on August 10, 2020 in Louviers (Eure, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).
What happened
The witness was in their living room at about 11:30 pm, according to the gendarmerie report, when they noticed a large, very bright light. They stepped out onto their balcony, and the light then slowly went out. A little later they saw the same kind of light again, this time positioned further to the left than the first one.
The technical questionnaire gives a slightly different account: a powerful, steady white light seen around midnight on 9 August. It went out and then came back on a little further away, and the observation lasted about 10 minutes. No other witness account was collected.
The investigation judged the case to have poor consistency. The two sources disagree on the date (10 August in the report, 9 August in the questionnaire), and this inconsistency could not be resolved. There is also little usable information. The comet Neowise was considered and ruled out: it cannot appear the way the witness described it, let alone in two different places within such a short time. The description instead suggests satellite flashes, with a bright, brief white light repeated twice at two separate points in the sky. For 10 August, the CNES COSE identified several Starlink satellites visible from the witness's location, while nothing matched for 9 August. Because of the unresolved date discrepancy and the lack of some key data, the case was classified C: insufficient data.
