Sighting in Communay, January 10, 2015
Rhône, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France
Sighting on January 10, 2015 in Communay (Rhône, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).
What happened
At 18:08, a motorist noticed two very bright points fairly low in the sky and took a photo. No other witness came forward. The two lights were separated by a dark mass, which suggests an aircraft flying at medium or low altitude. The witness had also noted changes in direction.
The investigation relied on a Flight Radar record: at 17:01 UTC, the Nantes–Lyon flight passed over the area at less than 2,500 m altitude. Traffic is fairly heavy at that spot, even at medium and low altitude, so the changes of direction may have come from the sighting of another aircraft. An hour later, for example, three HOP aircraft followed one another within a few minutes, heading from northwest to southeast below 2,500 m at the same location.
The GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable observation of low-altitude aircraft.
