Sighting in Couëron, October 7, 2011

Loire-Atlantique, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on October 7, 2011 in Couëron (Loire-Atlantique, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 10:15 p.m., a witness watched a luminous phenomenon in the sky for about fifteen seconds. Three pale white triangular objects, themselves arranged in a triangle, moved from the northeast toward the southwest. A fourth object, separate from the group and located farther west, followed the same direction at the same speed. The whole formation travelled silently beneath the cloud cover present that evening, then eventually vanished into the clouds. No other witness account was collected.

The description of four lights moving slowly in a straight line suggested Thai lanterns. However, the triangular shape and the movement perpendicular to the wind, according to the Nantes and Saint-Nazaire readings supplied by Météociel, meant this explanation could not be confirmed, and the witness did not recognise the objects as such lanterns. Aircraft also fit poorly, given the triangular arrangement of the lights and the lack of noise. Because the data were insufficient, the GEIPAN classified the case as C.
