Sighting in Coulounieix-Chamiers, February 22, 2010

Dordogne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on February 22, 2010 in Coulounieix-Chamiers (Dordogne, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the star Sirius (class A).

What happened

At 1:55 in the morning, a witness standing in their garden noticed a stationary point of light in the sky that caught their attention. Looking at it more closely, they saw that the light it gave off changed colour. Impressed, the witness called their brother, who confirmed the sighting. The observation lasted more than 20 minutes.

The GEIPAN investigation noted that such a duration naturally suggested a celestial phenomenon. A reconstruction of the sky at the date and time of the event showed that the star Sirius was in the part of the sky the witness had been watching. Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, shows a changing brilliance, which matches the witness's description. The case was therefore classified A: the witness had observed the star Sirius.
