Sighting in Dommartin, June 24, 2012

Rhône, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on June 24, 2012 in Dommartin (Rhône, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Shortly after midnight, a witness and their spouse were looking at the clear night sky when they noticed about ten yellowish-white points of light. At first the lights seemed to hang motionless. Then they began to move, climbed, and sped away toward the horizon. The sighting lasted about five minutes, and no sound was heard. A photograph was taken. Only one witness account was collected.

GEIPAN compared the description and the photo with many reports involving Thai lanterns. Orange glows in the sky on a weekend night strongly suggest such objects, most likely released nearby at the end of a private party. The gendarmerie reached the same conclusion. The case was therefore classified B: probably Thai lanterns.
