Sighting in Eysines, January 13, 2010

Gironde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on January 13, 2010 in Eysines (Gironde, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the atmospheric re-entry of a space object (rocket stage, debris) (class A).

What happened

A motorist noticed an extremely bright light in the sky that held their attention for about 6 to 7 seconds. It was a fireball moving very fast from the southwest toward the north, and it vanished at the horizon. Another witness later wrote about the same event on a website.

The Réseau Français d'Observation des Météores had recorded the atmospheric entry of a bolide, or meteor, that day at 17:35 universal time, which is 18:35 French time. It was particularly visible in the Gironde department. GEIPAN concluded that the sighting matched this atmospheric entry and classified the case as A, meaning identified.
