Sighting in Firmi, March 12, 1989

Aveyron, Occitanie, France

Sighting on March 12, 1989 in Firmi (Aveyron, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably the atmospheric re-entry of a space object (rocket stage, debris) (class B).

What happened

One evening at about 7:20 p.m., a witness saw a flaming object cross the sky on an oblique path toward the ground. It left a trail behind it that changed from yellow to red, and then everything went out. At the moment when the object was thought to have hit the ground, the witness heard a dull noise.

The gendarmes went to the place where the object was believed to have come down and found nothing. GEIPAN classified the case as B: it was most likely the atmospheric entry of a meteorite.
