Sighting in Floirac, February 11, 2014

Gironde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on February 11, 2014 in Floirac (Gironde, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At 9:15 pm, the witness was closing their shutters when they noticed several luminous objects crossing the sky without making a sound. The bright objects followed one another from north to south, drifting in the same direction as the wind.

The Météociel record for Bordeaux showed a north-westerly wind of 22 to 33 km/h and a sky that was only partly cloudy (5/8). Given that wind direction, Thai lanterns could have been released from the quai des Chartrons. The Tet festival had been celebrated in Bordeaux on 8 February.

The GEIPAN classified the case as B: the sighting was probably of Thai lanterns.
