Sighting in Fontaines-sur-Saône, November 3, 2014

Rhône, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on November 3, 2014 in Fontaines-sur-Saône (Rhône, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class A).

What happened

The witness saw a silent display of several white lights moving in the sky. Together they seemed to form a single large object. The witness filmed it and considered the sighting entirely exceptional.

The GEIPAN investigation showed that the lights came from a very spectacular light show created for the inauguration of the Schuman bridge over the Saône in Lyon, held on 5 November 2014. The production company behind the show told GEIPAN that a rehearsal had taken place on the evening of Monday 3 November, two days before the inauguration. The unusual effects the witnesses described were the result of the projections falling on low clouds pushed along by a strong south wind. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as A: identified, explained by a light animation.
