Sighting in Fontevraud-l'Abbaye, July 20, 2014

Maine-et-Loire, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on July 20, 2014 in Fontevraud-l'Abbaye (Maine-et-Loire, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Around midnight, the witness noticed an orange light crossing the night sky silently from right to left. Several more lights of the same kind followed, a few minutes apart. No other witness account was gathered.

GEIPAN considered that orange lights passing over within a few minutes, one after another along the same path, on a weekend night, strongly suggested Thai lanterns. These had probably been released nearby at the end of a private party. The lights were seen moving toward the north-east, which fits the very light, variable wind from the west to south-west recorded at Tours. The case was classified B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
