Sighting in Angers, June 30, 2019

Maine-et-Loire, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on June 30, 2019 in Angers (Maine-et-Loire, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

From home, a minor was looking at the stars through an open window in the middle of the night. One of them drew their attention: it vanished, then reappeared a little further to the side, with no regular pattern. The witness told their parents about it the next day, and the GEIPAN was only informed in February 2020. According to the witness, they had been looking south, the sky was clear, and the Moon was visible to the east. This is the only account collected about the phenomenon.

Investigators compared these details with the data available for the stated date and time, 30 June 2019 at 00:05. The Moon did not rise until 02:04 and was only 6.8% illuminated, so it could not have been seen at that moment. Weather websites also reported cloud cover of 8/8 oktas, meaning a completely overcast sky. The observation therefore most likely did not take place at that date and time. The witness's father, contacted in March 2021, said the dates on the video and the camera matched those given, that his child clearly remembered seeing the Moon that night, and that only the month of June was certain.

This reply did not settle the day or the hour: the sighting may have happened later the same day, or at the stated time on another day in June. The case could not be meaningfully analysed. The GEIPAN classified it C because of insufficient usable information.
