Sighting in Mayet, March 3, 1989
Sarthe, Pays de la Loire, France
Sighting on March 3, 1989 in Mayet (Sarthe, France). After investigation, GEIPAN considers this phenomenon unexplained (class D).
What happened
During the night of 2 to 3 March 1989, two witnesses were driving when their car suddenly stopped and its headlights went out. They then saw a fireball giving off an intense red-orange light, moving from west to east. After it passed the car, the vehicle started up again on its own. The witnesses were badly shaken by the experience and wondered whether they had dreamed it.
After an article appeared in the local press, a woman from Le Mans contacted them. She had also seen an orange fireball that night, at around 1:30 a.m., and her dog had been very frightened for as long as the fireball was visible. She confirmed to them that they had not dreamed it.
GEIPAN classified the case as D (unexplained): a moving red fireball with effects on the witnesses' car, and a second witness whose dog was panicked.
