Sighting in Fort-de-France, 1970
Martinique, France
Sighting in 1970 in Fort-de-France (Martinique, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).
What happened
At around 10 p.m., two people were on the terrace of their home watching a Caravelle aircraft arriving from Guadeloupe. A white ball of light caught their attention. At first it seemed to be following the plane. Then, moving at very high speed, it overtook the aircraft on a straight path and vanished to the west. No particular sound was heard, and the sighting lasted only 3 to 5 seconds.
The event was reported several years after it happened. The witness said it could have taken place between the second half of 1969 and July 1970, so the GEIPAN dated it to 1 January 1970 by convention. No other account of this kind was collected in Martinique for that period.
The case is classified C, meaning the available information is insufficient. According to the GEIPAN's conclusion, it was a white ball of light that appeared to follow and then pass an aircraft.
