Sighting in Fouchy, November 19, 2017

Bas-Rhin, Grand Est, France

Sighting on November 19, 2017 in Fouchy (Bas-Rhin, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a reflection or photographic artefact (class A).

What happened

At 8:35 pm, two people were driving along departmental road 39, just outside Fouchy on the way to Urbeis. The driver (T1) and the front passenger (T2) were intrigued by coloured luminous shapes visible through the windscreen. The two witnesses disagreed on how to describe the phenomenon, but both said it was silent and stationary. Each of them photographed it with their own smartphone.

Their descriptions differed greatly, and in the photos what the passenger saw looked sharp while what the driver saw looked blurred. This raised the possibility of two separate observations, which were handled in two separate case files.

For the driver's case, an examination of the car's dashboard (a Dacia Sandero) revealed the source of the phenomenon. Overlaying the witnesses' photo and a photo of the dashboard with transparency showed that it was the reflection in the windscreen of the "Média Nav" screen. A wire or cable in front of the screen explained the two triangles. The red dot was the hazard warning button and the orange dot was the door-lock button. The reflection also accounted for the silence and the lack of movement. GEIPAN therefore classed the case A: a reflection of the dashboard on a glass surface. The phenomenon seen by the passenger is covered in a separate file.
