Sighting in Fouras, October 3, 2015

At around 10:15 pm, a witness who was closing their shutters noticed three ogive-shaped objects above a neighbor's trees. Each one alternated between red, blue and green, and the colors were not the same from one object to the next. They stayed motionless for several minutes, then moved away toward the south. The witness filmed the scene. Their son and partner drove to the seafront to keep watching through binoculars. The observation lasted 10 to 15 minutes, with no sound at all. It was the only testimony collected.

The investigation ruled out an aircraft, since the alternating blue, green and red does not match the position lights of any type of aircraft. A Thai lantern was also considered unlikely because of the three alternating colors. The video confirms that the phenomenon moved away, with a phase of near-stillness followed by a slow drift to the south. However, it does not clearly show three separate objects, nor does it confirm the apparent size and brightness the witness described. Because the filming did not start at the beginning of the sighting, the initial brightness may have been greater, and the dimming seen would fit with a movement away toward the south.

After analyzing the data and visiting the witness, the most probable explanation was an LED balloon, or a group of three. The regular alternation of colors, the slow drift with the wind and the lack of noise are consistent with such objects. The sighting took place on a Saturday evening between 10 and 11 pm, by the sea, which makes a festive event plausible. Comparison with images of LED balloons also supports this. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B.
