Sighting in Gainneville, July 12, 2015

Seine-Maritime, Normandie, France

Sighting on July 12, 2015 in Gainneville (Seine-Maritime, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Shortly before one in the morning, on a weekend night, several people gathered for an evening with friends noticed more than a dozen orange balls passing across the clear sky. They moved silently along a straight path and crossed the sky within a few minutes. The movement was seen going from the south-southeast toward the east. Only one witness account was collected.

GEIPAN compared this description with Thai lanterns, most likely released nearby at the end of a private party: orange balls crossing the sky in a few minutes on a weekend night strongly suggest them. The direction of travel is also consistent with the westerly wind recorded at the Le Havre-Octeville station that day. The case was classified B, probable observation of Thai lanterns.
