Sighting in Giberville, July 31, 2014
Calvados, Normandie, France
Sighting on July 31, 2014 in Giberville (Calvados, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).
What happened
From their garden, the witness saw an unknown object made up of three glowing balls arranged in a triangle. The balls moved across the sky from west to north. Their brightness increased, and then they vanished, as if they had suddenly accelerated.
GEIPAN considered that these orange balls crossing the sky quickly strongly resembled Thai lanterns, probably released nearby at the end of a private party. The direction of travel, from west to north, is consistent with the light south-westerly wind recorded at Caen. The case was classified B: probable observation of Thai lanterns.
