What happened

Several witnesses noticed a vermilion-red, warhead-shaped object with an irregular outline dropping straight down behind a mountain. Fearing an aircraft was in trouble, they alerted the gendarmerie immediately, and the gendarmes were also able to see the phenomenon.

The investigation established that it was an expired marine distress flare. A resident of a nearby hamlet had fired it with no particular purpose. The case was classified A (identified).
