Sighting in Guéthary, March 10, 2014
Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France
Sighting on March 10, 2014 in Guéthary (Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).
What happened
Between 7:30 and 7:45 pm, a motorist driving at 110 km/h on the A63 motorway noticed a dark, tube-shaped object standing out against the blue sky. The witness compared its proportions to those of a fairly thick fountain pen. A small green light beneath the object seemed to accompany it as it moved in a straight line. The witness heard no particular noise. Features of the landscape eventually hid the object from view. The report describes a continuous sighting of less than three seconds, lasting one to two seconds. No one else reported seeing it.
The investigation noted that the object was moving against the prevailing wind, and that its appearance was consistent with an aircraft seen from the side, but that a steady green light did not fit the direction of travel of an aircraft. GEIPAN could only conclude that the phenomenon could not be characterised simply. Its similarity to an aircraft and its straight path make the strangeness of the sighting relatively low; the brevity of the observation, the single testimony and the fact that the witness was driving all weaken the case. With no cross-checking available to support or rule out any hypothesis, the case was classed C, insufficient data.
