Sighting in Dax, December 11, 2018

Landes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on December 11, 2018 in Dax (Landes, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

After watching a film on television, the witness was listening to music and looking at the stars in a clear sky. Around 1:30 a.m., a light caught their attention, followed by three unidentified aerospace phenomena (PAN) passing one after another: two were oval and white, and a third was triangular and black. They moved quickly and silently, then disappeared behind a neighbouring building. The sighting lasted between 30 seconds and one minute. There was only one witness.

The investigation could not put forward an explanatory hypothesis, as the witness's statements were imprecise. The drawings provided did not match any known phenomenon. Several points remained unclear: the cloud cover that day could not be confirmed, the witness contradicted themselves about when the ambient photos were taken, and the date of the events itself is uncertain (the night of 10–11 or of 11–12 December). A television programme about UFOs aired on the evening of the 11th and may have influenced the witness. Despite follow-up requests, several questions went unanswered. Flying lanterns and a reflection in the window were considered, but the objects' shapes, their path relative to the wind, and the fact that the witness opened the window during the sighting did not fit. The link the witness drew with a sighting by Irish pilots could not be established.

GEIPAN classified the case as C: the strangeness is fairly high, but the testimony is too weak (single witness, no photo, imprecise details) to reach a conclusion.
