Sighting in Gujan-Mestras, June 19, 1978

Gironde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on June 19, 1978 in Gujan-Mestras (Gironde, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

Between 11 p.m. and 12:45 a.m., several people heard a loud, dull noise and then saw a luminous object above the built-up area. The object was orange and oval in shape. The witnesses noticed that the electric street lighting began to malfunction as the object remained present. It then gradually vanished from their view as it climbed higher.

Motorists driving on the RN113 toward Bordeaux, near La Réole, also saw a luminous phenomenon moving slowly across a stormy sky.

The investigation by the gendarmerie and the GEPAN could not clearly establish a link between the two sightings, because of a lack of detail and information. GEIPAN classed the case as B: the witnesses probably observed a meteorological phenomenon connected with the stormy weather threatening the area.
