Sighting in Isigny-le-Buat, June 19, 2010

Manche, Normandie, France

Sighting on June 19, 2010 in Isigny-le-Buat (Manche, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 11:30 pm on a Saturday evening, the witness was near a village festival. Their attention was drawn to a red light that changed in intensity and to an object carrying white lights, which they could not identify. The sighting lasted between 5 and 10 minutes, and the lights stayed stationary throughout. The witness thought of one or more helicopters.

The investigation partly ruled this out: no noise was heard, and the slow, unusual blinking of the lights does not match a helicopter. Two other explanations were put forward. One was a tethered balloon fitted with lights, possibly connected to the fireworks display the witness had also seen. The other was a few high-altitude balloons still lit by the last rays of the sun, which had set a little over an hour earlier. The first hypothesis could not be checked.

The GEIPAN rated the case as moderately strange, because the phenomenon stayed still and its light pulsed at a particular rhythm, and as highly consistent, because the witness gave a precise description. Without independent witnesses or cross-checking, no firm conclusion could be reached, and the case was classified C, insufficient data.
