Sighting in Jaunay-Clan, July 11, 2013

Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on July 11, 2013 in Jaunay-Clan (Vienne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Late on a Thursday evening, at about 11:45 p.m., a witness noticed several glowing phenomena crossing the horizon in complete silence. The objects were rectangular with rounded corners and moved in a straight line from north to south. The witness produced an animation to illustrate what they had seen.

GEIPAN considered that the objects might have been carried by the wind and briefly hidden by trees, which would account for their straight path. The Météociel record showed a northeasterly wind, which fits the observed movement fairly well. The witness may not have perceived the east-to-west component, which from their position would have looked like a slight approach. The Futuroscope park, next to the town and the venue for many summer night shows, was not within the witness's field of view. That evening was also the opening of the summer evenings in the town, which may have involved festivities. However, the direction the lights came from pointed rather to a release on the banks of the Clain, north of the town.

The description matches Thai lanterns, white or red. GEIPAN classed the case as B: probable observation of Thai lanterns.
