Sighting in Jonzieux, January 14, 2025

Loire, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on January 14, 2025 in Jonzieux (Loire, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a train or group of satellites (class A).

What happened

At around 7 a.m., the witness was on their terrace, which faces south-east, looking toward where the sun was about to rise. They were gazing at the stars in the transition between night and day when they noticed a group of about 10 white lights lined up in a straight row. The lights seemed to emerge from above the roof of their house, on the north-west side, and travel toward the south-east, slightly east of where the sun usually rises. The photo reconstruction supplied by the witness confirms this direction. No other witness account was collected.

The investigation concluded that the witness had seen a Starlink satellite train, the line-up these satellites form once released from their launcher, before moving into position in SPACEX's mega-constellation, which provides internet access from orbit. The Sun, already set for the observer, was reflecting off the satellites' solar panels, which made them visible. The COSE (the CNES Space Surveillance Operations Centre) confirmed the passage of these satellites. They came from launch 2025-008, carried out on 13 January 2025 at 16:47:09 UTC by a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral. GEIPAN classified the case as A: identified phenomenon.
