Sighting on May 7, 2008 in Juigné-des-Moutiers (Loire-Atlantique, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

A group of six secondary-school students saw two glowing balls in the sky at about 10:55 p.m. The balls moved silently, seemed to hover for a while, then quickly set off again on a rising path. The witnesses described them as white and blue, with a luminous thread, and said their movement was not quite in a straight line.

The map reconstruction of the scene and the weather data, which showed a light easterly wind in Nantes, pointed to Thai lanterns. These could have been released from one of the houses to the east, at the edge of a forest. The testimony does not fully match this explanation, however, because of the colours, the luminous thread and the trajectory.

The case showed little strangeness and was already old, so the GEIPAN did not reopen the investigation. It classified the case C because of insufficient information, while considering the Thai lantern hypothesis fairly likely.
