Sighting in La Grande-Motte, November 3, 2025
Hérault, Occitanie, France
Sighting on November 3, 2025 in La Grande-Motte (Hérault, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an aircraft contrail (class A).
What happened
A lone witness on the beach, at around 5:35 pm and shortly after sunset, noticed seven white, elongated shapes lying horizontally in the sky to the west. They moved slowly, some from left to right and others the opposite way. After a few minutes they gradually vanished, shrinking as they moved farther away. The witness took five photographs with their smartphone. No one else came forward to GEIPAN. The case has good consistency despite the single testimony, because the five photos made it possible to support the analysis. For the witness, the experience felt very strange, as the shapes seemed unusual to them.
The investigation concluded that these were aircraft contrails seen from a great distance. Their elongated shape and white-to-yellow color are typical of contrails seen around sunrise or sunset. At that hour, low light from the west strongly illuminates contrails at cruising altitude while the sky is already falling into twilight shadow, which makes them stand out and visible from several hundred kilometers away. Two busy air corridors, running southwest to northeast, pass over the Toulouse region about 220 to 265 km away (distance projected on the ground). Weather records from Montpellier show exceptionally clear air, with maximum horizontal visibility (about 60 km). The specific aircraft could not be identified because of the heavy traffic. However, analysis of the photos with the IPACO software puts the planes at a cruising altitude of 8 to 9 km, flying at 800 to 916 km/h, and 275 to 314 km from the witness. Since this explanation removes the strangeness of the case, GEIPAN classified it A.
