Sighting in Valras-Plage, February 20, 2025

Hérault, Occitanie, France

Sighting on February 20, 2025 in Valras-Plage (Hérault, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

The witness was standing at the entrance of their home, in the north of the town, when they noticed a luminous phenomenon in the night sky that lasted two to three seconds. It consisted of two reddish glows at the front of a translucent, pinkish triangular shape. It appeared and then vanished abruptly.

The witness was alone and took no photo or video. Even so, the GEIPAN rated the consistency of the account as medium: the information provided was clear, and a shop receipt confirmed the date and time of the sighting.

The investigation looked at several possibilities: an atmospheric re-entry, an aircraft, Starlink satellites, LED balloons or lanterns, and birds. None of them could explain the observation. Atmospheric re-entry seemed the most likely given the characteristics described, but no recording or other testimony confirmed it. Because the sighting was so brief and there were no other witnesses, little firm information could be gathered on the trajectory and distance of the phenomenon. The GEIPAN therefore classified the case as C: unidentified phenomenon due to insufficient data.
