Sighting in La Montagne, January 9, 2012

Loire-Atlantique, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on January 9, 2012 in La Montagne (Loire-Atlantique, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class B).

What happened

On a Monday morning, shortly after 7 a.m., a motorist was surprised and intrigued by what appeared in the cloudy sky: two concentric luminous circles, themselves made up of rounded elements separated from one another, moving about. The witness followed this display over roughly a kilometre. After two minutes, on joining an expressway, they could no longer see it. No other testimony was collected.

The phenomenon the witness described closely matches the effect produced by certain entertainment projectors, which points clearly to that origin. The day of the week is unusual for this kind of display and there is apparently no nightclub nearby, but it could have been a test using rented equipment. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable observation of a light display produced by a rotating-beam skytracer.
