Sighting in La Rabatelière, January 1, 2014
Vendée, Pays de la Loire, France
Sighting on January 1, 2014 in La Rabatelière (Vendée, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).
What happened
Shortly after midnight on New Year's night, several people noticed a light moving across the sky without making any sound. The movement caught their attention, and a photograph was taken. The light was red-orange and travelled slowly. The witness reported that it moved from the south-west toward the north-east.
GEIPAN considered that a slow light of this colour, seen on a night of celebrations, was consistent with a Thai lantern. According to Meteociel, a light southerly wind was blowing that night, which does not conflict with the direction described. The photograph supplied, greatly enlarged and probably affected by camera shake blur, fits this explanation. The case was classified B: probable sighting of a Thai lantern.
