Sighting in La Vergenne, June 2, 2010

Haute-Saône, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on June 2, 2010 in La Vergenne (Haute-Saône, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably the atmospheric re-entry of a space object (rocket stage, debris) (class B).

What happened

Between about 8:30 and 8:45 pm, a witness caught sight of a luminous object for a very brief moment, one to two seconds. It was egg-shaped and a pale, fluorescent green. It came from the south and sped toward the north-northeast in a straight line at high speed. The witness heard no sound and saw no trail behind it.

The investigation noted that the shape resembled a comet, and that the pale fluorescent green color, together with the brevity and speed of the event, fits what would be expected of an atmospheric re-entry. The GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B, a probable atmospheric re-entry of a meteor.
