Sighting in Lacour-d'Arcenay, March 23, 2022

Côte-d'Or, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on March 23, 2022 in Lacour-d'Arcenay (Côte-d'Or, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class A).

What happened

At 10:08 pm, the witness, who was looking at the sky, heard a dull, droning noise. An object then appeared suddenly from the south. It passed almost directly overhead, continued toward the north-north-west, and then began a distinct turn toward the north-west. It seemed to be flying at low altitude. The witness made out three blue lights: one in the centre and two set further apart, possibly on wings.

The case rested on a single witness, with no photo or video, so its consistency was rated as medium. The description strongly suggested a military aircraft, which was also the explanation the witness favoured. The GEIPAN asked the CNOA (the Air and Space Force's National Air Operations Centre) for a reconstruction. It confirmed that a military aircraft flying under visual flight rules matched the sighting in trajectory, timing and location. The case was classified A: observation of a military aircraft.
