Sighting in Meursanges, September 10, 2012

Côte-d'Or, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on September 10, 2012 in Meursanges (Côte-d'Or, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 8:20 p.m., two witnesses watched a luminous orange phenomenon with a long tail move slowly across the sky at very high altitude. It followed a straight path and eventually vanished toward the south, hidden by a cloud. Only one of the two witnesses submitted an account, and it was very brief.

The investigation considered this a distant sighting with little strangeness, but one that was poorly documented and imprecise. The description suggests an aircraft contrail seen through low clouds, and orange is a common colour for contrails located to the west around sunset, which occurred at 8:13 p.m. that day at that location. However, GEIPAN does not have enough concrete evidence to support this hypothesis. The case is therefore classified C, for lack of information.
