Sighting in Lacs, July 12, 2014

Indre, Centre-Val de Loire, France

Sighting on July 12, 2014 in Lacs (Indre, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

The witness was lying on their bed when they turned their head toward the window and saw a large red-orange glowing ball go by, attached to a second, smaller one. The objects moved slowly and silently, very close, just above the roof. The witness estimated that they came from the direction of Sainte-Sévère-sur-Indre and headed toward Thevet-Saint-Julien, that is, from the south-east to the north-east.

The witness also mentioned a similar sighting on another occasion, involving several balls.

The investigation noted that at Châteauroux, around 1 a.m., the wind was light, from the south, and variable toward the south-west or west, so the objects could have been carried by the wind. Thai lantern releases are common in summer, especially on weekends and around 14 July, and the witness's account fits this explanation. GEIPAN classified the case as B, a probable sighting of Thai lanterns. The other sighting the witness mentioned probably had the same origin.
