Sighting in Lafitte-Vigordane, May 25, 2013

Haute-Garonne, Occitanie, France

Sighting on May 25, 2013 in Lafitte-Vigordane (Haute-Garonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

On a Saturday evening at 11:05 p.m., a witness noticed a flashing light moving slowly across the sky. It appeared white, red or yellow at different moments and was surrounded by a red halo. It came from the west and gradually climbed higher. The witness heard no particular noise during the two-minute observation, which ended when the light vanished into a cloud. The witness also filmed it, and the video shows a yellow light ringed with red.

The investigation noted, from weather records, that the wind was blowing toward the witness. The sighting is fully consistent with a Thai lantern released in the witness's line of sight, one or two kilometres away. Saturday evening is a common time for releasing such lanterns at private parties, and the flickering was probably caused by imperfect combustion of the burner. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable sighting of a Thai lantern.
