Sighting in « les Tuiles » Bertre, September 4, 1989

Tarn, Occitanie, France

Sighting on September 4, 1989 in « les Tuiles » Bertre (Tarn, France). After investigation, GEIPAN considers this phenomenon unexplained (class D).

What happened

At around 4:30 a.m., a witness who was suffering from insomnia noticed a strong glow through an open window. They got up and saw, down below in an alfalfa field, a luminous square about 10 metres on each side. The light came from a motionless object hovering above the roof of their house, shaped like a spinning top with many facets.

After roughly thirty seconds, the phenomenon vanished abruptly, with no noise and no smell. The next day, the witness found that the channel-type roof tiles had turned brownish where the object had been, and that they had shifted so as to form a gutter. The contractor who repaired the roof confirmed that the tiles had been twisted clockwise over a length of 3 to 5 metres, and that the ridge had sagged at the spot of the sighting.

The SEPRA investigation could not find any explanation. GEIPAN classified the case as D: unexplained phenomenon.
