Sighting in Landes, July 1970

Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting in July 1970, exact location not given (département: Landes, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

A witness reported that on a July evening, around 9 p.m., they saw an object arrive at an altitude of 300 to 400 m. It was saucer-shaped, white or aluminium in colour, and 6 to 8 m across. The exact year is unknown: the witness's recollection places it between 1970 and 1973, and the file conventionally uses 1 July 1970. The object moved very slowly along a broken line from right to left. Two powerful spotlights mounted at the front cast a beam of light.

The witness called out to family members, who watched the object vanish at very high speed and without any noise, climbing at a 45° angle. A second object then appeared at the same altitude. It was cigar-shaped, white or aluminium, about thirty metres long, and arrived silently. Around thirty portholes showed a soft, dim light inside. It travelled very slowly in a straight line and then disappeared behind the treetops. Both objects came from the north-north-west and headed south-south-east.

The witness also mentioned a press article about lights that appeared at Bordeaux airport that same evening.

GEIPAN classified the case as C (insufficient data). The very old testimony contains surprisingly precise details, but information is lacking and the events are too long past to be investigated. The conclusion recorded was the observation of unknown aircraft in motion.
