Sighting in Lannion, July 23, 2017

Côtes-d'Armor, Bretagne, France

Sighting on July 23, 2017 in Lannion (Côtes-d'Armor, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the International Space Station (ISS) (class A).

What happened

On a Sunday evening at 11:27 pm, a witness and their partner watched a white point of light drift slowly across a clear sky from west to east for less than a minute. It grew gradually fainter as it moved along. The GEIPAN received only one account of the sighting.

The witness gave a very precise date and position in the sky. These details matched exactly a pass of the International Space Station (ISS) listed on Calsky. The witness first noticed it when it was at its brightest, in the southeast at about 70° elevation. It then sank toward the east, steadily losing brightness. The GEIPAN therefore classified the case as A: the object was the ISS.
