Sighting in Le Loroux-Bottereau, October 31, 1980

Loire-Atlantique, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on October 31, 1980 in Le Loroux-Bottereau (Loire-Atlantique, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

A motorist driving home from work noticed three bright points of light low in the sky, toward the north-east, which put them on the left-hand side of the road. The driver felt that the lights were following the car as it moved and stopping whenever it stopped. No sound was heard.

At home, the driver's spouse saw the same thing and kept watching it until 7:30 a.m., when they left for work. During the investigation, other people who had seen the same phenomenon came forward.

A check of the sky that night showed a conjunction of Venus, Jupiter and Saturn, especially visible toward the east, very low on the horizon, until daybreak. GEIPAN concluded that the witnesses had probably observed this conjunction, and classified the case as B (probably identified).
