Sighting in Le Montat, June 6, 2010

Lot, Occitanie, France

Sighting on June 6, 2010 in Le Montat (Lot, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

Several witnesses were intrigued, during the night from Saturday to Sunday, by a white light that passed quickly overhead. It moved at low altitude, travelling from the east toward the south. The sighting lasted between 5 and 10 seconds.

When the GEIPAN investigated in 2012, it considered a large satellite, which could produce this appearance; the shape the witnesses reported seeing could be a kind of optical illusion. Some satellites follow slightly retrograde orbits, with an inclination of around 100°, which could fit a path from east to south. Since simulations were no longer possible for a date in 2010, this explanation could not be checked.

The GEIPAN was therefore unable to reach a firm conclusion. The case has relatively low strangeness (a point of light moving in a straight line) and good consistency, as the account was precise. It is classified C because there were no independent witnesses and no means of cross-checking.
