Sighting in Le Porge, August 31, 2014

Gironde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on August 31, 2014 in Le Porge (Gironde, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

A witness was closing their shutters when they noticed between twelve and fifteen luminous objects in the sky. The objects moved in formation and seemed to fly without making any sound. The whole group crossed the sky within a few minutes, on a weekend night, travelling from north to south.

The investigation found that a group of lights crossing the sky in a few minutes on a weekend night strongly suggests Thai lanterns, probably released nearby at the end of a private party. The north-to-south direction fits the north-west to north wind recorded at Bordeaux. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: probable observation of Thai lanterns.
