Sighting in Le Thoronet, May 14, 1995

Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on May 14, 1995 in Le Thoronet (Var, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

A witness was alone at an isolated campsite when they spotted a bright, egg-shaped object between the trees, very close by. It was motionless and silent, hovering about one metre above the ground. The witness tried to photograph it, but the camera jammed. The object then seemed to change in volume and move toward them. Frightened, the witness ran off to call the gendarmerie, then went back to the tent with the gendarmes.

The investigation found no traces on the ground or in the vegetation, and no other testimony was collected. No military aircraft were flying in the area that evening. The case rests on a single, isolated witness, but the description is fairly precise, and the witness's sincerity and credibility were never questioned. However, the timing is vague, which makes it impossible to identify the phenomenon with certainty.

The direction of observation, shape, size and colour have much in common with the Moon. According to GEIPAN, the witness's eyesight is not in question, but rather their interpretation of what they saw, influenced by panic, tiredness and the fact that it was night. Originally rated "D" by SEPRA and now re-examined, the case is classed "C" (insufficient data), with a mistake involving the Moon still considered possible.
