Sighting in Les Mées, August 25, 2011

Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on August 25, 2011 in Les Mées (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

The witness saw several orange lights in the sky one Thursday evening in August 2011. The lights moved about, then merged into a single fixed point of light before disappearing. The GEIPAN only received the witness's questionnaire by email at the start of March 2012, a little over five months after the event.

The case was rated as moderately strange and of good consistency. Two explanations remained possible, though neither was considered likely: model aircraft flying and Thai lanterns. An on-site investigation might have turned up other witnesses to the phenomenon. Because of the lack of information, the case was provisionally classified C (insufficient data), pending other simultaneous testimonies.
